A bed is a piece of furniture designed for sleeping, resting, and relaxation.

In the modern era, most beds consist of a soft, cushioned mattress resting on a bed frame. This frame may use a solid base of wood slats or a sprung base. Many setups include a box spring, which is a mattress-sized box containing wood and springs. This provides extra support and suspension for the mattress. Beds are categorized by size to suit different users. These range from infant bassinets and cribs to single adult beds. Larger options include queen and king-size beds designed for two people.

Beds function through several mechanical layers and specialized designs. The mattress is the primary surface for the sleeper. To support the head, a pillow made of soft, padded material is placed on top. Bedding refers to the removable, non-furniture components like sheets, quilts, or duvets. These items provide insulation and can be washed or aired out. Some frames include a headboard for leaning or side rails and footboards for structure. Certain styles serve specific spatial needs. A murphy bed folds into a wall to save room. A sofa bed folds out of a couch. A trundle bed stays hidden under a twin bed until it is rolled out. Bunk beds use two tiers and a ladder for vertical sleeping.

Historically, the concept of a "bed" has shifted over time. In early Europe, the term referred to the pile of soft materials rather than the frame. This pile included straw, chaff, animal hair, or down feathers. The bedframe was a separate support that was not considered part of the "bed." As innovations made frames more portable, their importance grew. In the Middle Ages, luxury increased with decorated wooden bedsteads. By the 14th century, the four-poster bed, or tester bed, became common. These were slung from ceilings or fastened to walls. They could create a "room within a room" using double curtains to block drafts.

Archaeological evidence shows that humans have sought comfort for millennia. Scientists discovered grass bedding dating back at least 200,000 years. This ancient bedding included ash layers and insect-repellent plants to create a clean, insulated base. In South Africa, bedding made of sedge was found in Sibudu Cave from around 3600 BC. In Scotland, stone-built settlements like Skara Brae used raised stone boxes for bedding between 3200 BC and 2200 BC. Raising beds off the ground was a vital development. It helped humans avoid dirt, drafts, and pests.

Ancient civilizations developed highly specialized beds for different social roles. The Egyptians used high bedsteads that required steps to climb. Elite members of society used gilded wooden beds and stone headrests.

Ancient Romans had a variety of specific bed types. The *lectus cubicularis* was a standard chamber bed for sleeping. The *lectus genialis* served as a decorated marriage bed. The *lectus discubitorius* was a table bed used for eating while reclining. They even had a *lectus funebris* for carrying the dead. In Greece, the epic poem *The Odyssey* describes a bed carved from a massive olive tree trunk.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, beds became symbols of immense political power. In France, the "bed of justice" was used by kings to denote royal authority. This was a ceremonial bed where the king reclined during parliament. King Louis XIV owned as many as 413 sumptuous beds in his palaces. Some were decorated with pearls and silver or gold embroidery.

The 18th century also saw the rise of iron beds. Advertisements claimed these were beneficial because they were free from insects. This was a practical solution to pests that often infested wooden bedsteads.

Today, beds connect to various needs through diverse materials and forms. Some people use temporary options like inflatable air mattresses or folding camp cots. Others prefer specialized designs like hammocks, which use neither a frame nor a padded mattress. Even animals have beds made specifically for them. From the massive, highly decorated beds of ancient royalty to the simple, functional designs of today, the bed remains a central piece of human life. It serves as a tool for health, a symbol of status, and a fundamental requirement for rest.
