A shelf is a flat, horizontal, or sloping plane used for the storage or display of items.

These surfaces are essential in homes, businesses, and retail stores. They are typically raised off the floor to organize space. A shelf can be known by many names, such as a counter, a ledge, a mantel, or a rack. Some tables designed to be placed against a wall are called console tables. These are very similar to individual shelves.

Shelves stay in place through several different mechanical methods. They are often anchored to a wall or a vertical surface. They might be supported on their shorter sides by brackets. Other shelves are attached to cabinetry using dowels, screws, nails, or brackets. Some structures are held up by pillars or columns. A shelf with hidden internal brackets is specifically called a floating shelf. Some units are part of a free-standing frame. These can be accessed from one or both of their longer sides.

There are many different types of shelving units used for specific tasks. A bookshelf or a case designed for books is a common type. Many units consist of two to six shelves. These are often attached perpendicularly to vertical or diagonal supports. The shelves are usually positioned parallel to one another. Some systems are adjustable, allowing the vertical distance between shelves to change. This helps accommodate objects of different heights. Some shelving is fixed, while other systems are mobile. The most heavy-duty type of shelving is called pallet racking.

Materials play a major role in how a shelf functions and what it can hold. Strong materials like wood, bamboo, or steel are the most common choices. For lighter objects, manufacturers may use glass or plastic. Some people create do-it-yourself shelves from old doors, books, or even colored pencils. Modern technology even allows for 3D printing to create shelves with intricate details.

Another popular style is pipe shelving. This usually consists of wood boards resting on black or galvanized steel gas pipes. While copper pipe can be used, it is not recommended for heavy-duty needs.

Pipe shelving is versatile and used in homes, restaurants, and even hotels. Some designs are free-standing, while most attach to walls using flanges. These flanges can be directed backwards to secure the unit. This style has even been used in reclamation projects like shipping container architecture. In retail settings, sloping shelves are often used. A sloping shelf helps make the contents more visible to customers. In stores, the front edge of a shelf might display product numbers or pricing information.

Designers use specific proportions to ensure that wall-mounted shelves remain stable. When hanging a shelf, the width should generally not exceed 1.4 times the bracket's width. Additionally, the width should not be more than 1.2 times the bracket's height. For long shelves using normal household materials, brackets should be spaced no more than four times the shelf-breadth apart. These measurements help prevent the shelf from failing under weight. Proper spacing ensures the load is distributed safely across the supports.

Securing a shelf to a wall also depends on the wall material itself. The length and size of the screws must be chosen carefully. For example, when mounting into a concrete wall, a good rule is to use deep screws. The screw should enter the wall at least one-tenth as far as the width of the shelf. Some specialized systems use a brace hung on the wall instead of individual screws. These braces allow brackets to be attached without needing to drill directly into the wall. This careful planning keeps both the items and the furniture safe.
