Shelf (storage)

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A shelf is a flat surface used for storing or showing items.

You can find them in homes, stores, or businesses. They are usually raised off the floor to keep things safe. Some shelves are part of larger furniture like a bookcase or a cabinet. A shelf can also be a ledge or a counter. They help us stay organized by giving every object a place.

Shelves stay up using many different ways. Some are attached to a wall with brackets or nails.

A floating shelf uses hidden brackets inside the wood so it looks like it is hovering. Other shelves are held up by columns or pillars. Some are part of a free-standing frame that stands on its own. You might even see shelves that hang down from a ceiling. The way they are built depends on what they must hold.

People use many materials to make these surfaces. Strong wood, bamboo, or steel are very common choices.

If the items are light, makers might use glass or plastic. Some people even use metal pipes to support wooden boards. This is called pipe shelving and can be used in homes or restaurants. Some companies even use this style for big projects like hotels. You can even 3D print a shelf with tiny details.

Designers use math to make sure shelves are safe and useful. For example, a shelf should not be too wide for its brackets. A good rule is to keep the width under 1.4 times the bracket's width. When using a concrete wall, screws should go in quite deep. They should go in at least one-tenth the width of the shelf. This helps the shelf stay firmly in place. Spacing between shelves also depends on the height of the objects.

Shelves help us see and find our things easily. In a store, a shelf might have labels for prices or names.

Some shelves are built at a tilt. These are called sloping shelves. They make it easier for people to see what is on them. This is a very helpful way to display products in a shop. Even a simple shelf makes our daily lives much easier.
