While they are often found in outdoor settings, benches are also used indoors. They serve as essential pieces of furniture for resting, socializing, or observing surroundings. Many designs include a back rest for comfort, and some also feature arm rests. In many American public spaces, people or groups may donate benches. These often include an affixed plaque to serve as a memorial to a deceased person.

Benches are categorized by their specific intended use and location. Park benches provide seating within public parks and vary in their capacity. Garden benches are similar but are typically longer to offer more sitting places.

Picnic tables include benches alongside a table, sometimes with collapsible legs for easier transport. Scenic benches are positioned specifically to help people enjoy a landscape or a street scene. In high-traffic areas, perch benches allow people to take a quick break. Other specialized types include storage benches, which combine seating with a box for supplies.

Many unique designs exist for very specific social or functional roles. A courting bench, also known as a tête-à-tête, features two seats pointing in opposite directions. This design allows two people to face each other almost directly. In school playgrounds, a buddy bench or friendship bench helps children find someone to talk to.

Religious settings use church benches or pews, which may include a kneeling bench. Even specialized professions use the term, such as the bench behind which a judge sits in a courtroom. Musicians use a piano bench, which can seat one or two people.

Construction materials are chosen based on durability, maintenance, and the intended environment. Wood is a common choice for walking trails and state parks. However, wood requires high maintenance, such as insect repellent or polyurethane coatings.

Concrete benches are extremely heavy and permanent, making them ideal for military bases or state parks. They are very durable in any climate. Aluminum is a lightweight and corrosive-free option often used at sports fields. Fiberglass is another versatile material that does not rust, making it common in food courts and office buildings.

Modern manufacturing has introduced many sustainable and high-tech materials. Recycled plastic benches are low maintenance and work well in salty, ocean-side environments. These often use post-consumer material and can help with LEED certification. Powder-coated steel is frequently used for heavy-duty constructions at retail centers or medical facilities. This finish provides excellent anti-corrosive qualities. Thermoplastic is an environmentally friendly coating for metal benches. It is graffiti resistant and comes in six common patterns, such as expanded metal or strap style.

History shows how different materials have shaped bench design over time. Early outdoor benches were often constructed from cast iron. In the mid-19th century, the iron foundry Janes, Beebe & Co. produced some of the earliest cast iron benches in America. Other traditional methods include adobe benches, or banco. These are made of packed earth combined with a binder like straw. This technique is used globally in areas that utilize mud construction. Even today, technology is changing the bench, such as the solar smart bench that provides Wi-Fi.

Benches connect to many different fields of human activity. In fitness, a utility bench is used for exercises like the bench press. In automobiles, a bench seat provides a continuous pad across the cabin. Some benches are even designed for movement, such as swing seats or glider benches. Glider benches use a mechanism to rock back and forth without being suspended. Whether they are used for play, work, or quiet contemplation, benches remain a fundamental part of our shared spaces.
