The rockers touch the floor at only two points. You can rock by shifting your weight. You can also push lightly with your feet. Many people find this motion very soothing. It can even help you fall asleep faster. This motion is like a parent rocking a baby to sleep.

There are many ways to make these chairs. Most rocking chairs are made of wood. Some use a spring base called a platform rocker. Other chairs use swinging braces called gliders.

In the 1830s, Peter Cooper made a chair from iron. His design was very simple and clean. It did not have the heavy decorations seen in Victorian times. Instead of adding rockers to legs, he used the frame itself to rock. His steel chair was shown at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851.

History shows that rocking items have been around for a long time. Rocking cradles for babies are very old. An example was even found in the ruins of Herculaneum. Early rocking chairs appeared in England in 1725. People in North America also made them in the early 18th century.

Many famous makers changed how we sit. Michael Thonet was a German craftsman. He created the first bentwood rocking chair in 1860.

These chairs were light and had a graceful shape. In the 1920s, folding rocking chairs became popular. They were very handy for traveling or being outdoors. Later, Sam Maloof became famous for his wooden chairs in the 1950s. His chairs were very strong and had rockers shaped like skis.

Different styles of chairs have unique looks. Boston rockers were made of oak and pine. They were often painted black with flower designs.

There are also ladder back chairs with tall backs. Some chairs have a pressed back with raised wood designs. Wicker armchairs were often part of a larger set for a sun parlor. These sets could include a sofa, a table, and even a lamp. Each style shows how people have enjoyed rocking for years.
