People have used many ways to move babies throughout history.

Some methods involve holding a child close to the body. Others use wheeled devices like prams or strollers.

Prams are for newborn babies who lie down facing the pusher. Strollers are for children up to three years old. These children sit up and face forward to see the world. Many cultures also use portable baskets or bassinets to keep infants safe.

Carrying a baby on the body works in different ways.

Native Americans used a cradleboard to keep babies secure. A mother would attach the board to her back using straps. This allowed the mother to work and travel easily. The baby stays snug on a flat surface made of wood or twigs. Soft things like moss or bark were used for padding. For older children, parents might use a backpack carrier or a sling. These tools help a parent move while keeping the child close.

Wheeled transport has changed a lot over many years.

In 1733, William Kent built a shell-shaped basket on wheels. This early stroller was pulled by a goat or a small pony. Later, in the 1830s, Benjamin Potter Crandall sold carriages in the United States. By 1840, baby carriages became very popular. Queen Victoria even bought three carriages from a store. These early models were often made of wood or wicker. They sometimes had fancy brass parts to look like art.

New inventions made moving babies much easier for families.

In 1889, William H. Richardson patented a reversible stroller. His design allowed the baby to face the parent or face out. In 1965, an engineer named Owen Maclaren changed everything. He used light aluminum from airplanes to make a stroller. This became the first true umbrella stroller. It was much easier to carry than heavy old prams. This design helped the stroller become popular all over the world.

Today, many families use what is called a travel system.

This is a set of parts that work together. A baby seat can snap into a base inside a car. Then, that same seat can snap onto a stroller frame. This helps a sleeping baby stay asleep during a trip. Some new designs even turn into kick scooters for kids. Other ways to travel include using bicycle seats or trailers.
