Most people think of horses, but specialized saddles exist for camels and oxen too. To stay in place, a saddle is fastened to the animal's back by a wide strap called a girth.

Inside most saddles is a solid saddle tree. This is a base made of wood or synthetic material. The tree is the most important part for comfort. It supports the rider and spreads their weight across the animal's back.

This prevents the rider's weight from pressing too hard on one spot. The tree also determines the size of the seat. The seat is where the rider sits, usually placed between a front pommel and a rear cantle.

Stirrups hang from the tree to give the rider support and leverage.

Saddles have changed a lot throughout history. Early riders likely used simple blankets or pads first.

Later, people in the Pazyryk culture of Siberia used saddles with frames around 500 to 400 BC. These early designs included leather cushions and a pommel. Many ancient people used saddles as status symbols. They added gold, precious metals, and beautiful carvings to show wealth.

New inventions made riding much more stable. The solid tree was a huge step forward. It helped animals live longer by reducing pressure on their spines.

Another big change was the stirrup. A simple leather strap for the toe was first made in India around the 2nd century BC. However, the modern paired stirrup likely came from the Mongolic Rouran tribes.
