A pack animal is a working animal used to move things. These animals carry goods or materials on their backs. People often call them beasts of burden or sumpter animals.

Many different species can do this job. Some are in the horse family, like horses, donkeys, and mules. Others include camels, goats, and llamas. Even some dogs can carry small loads.

These animals help people move items across many different lands.

To carry a load, people use special gear. One way is to use a pack saddle. They might also use saddlebags to hold items.

Another way is to use panniers. Panniers are two weighted loads. These are often placed symmetrically on each side. This helps the animal stay balanced while it walks. This way of working helps move heavy things easily.

Using animals to carry goods has a long history. Pack horses and donkeys were very important for transport. They were a main way to move goods until the Middle Ages. By the sixteenth century, things began to change. People started using wagons pulled by horses and oxen. This slowly replaced the use of pack animals for moving goods.

Now, the use of these animals is changing again.

Different animals can carry different amounts of weight. A llama can carry about a quarter of its body weight. An adult male llama weighing 300 pounds can carry 75 pounds.

Reindeer can carry up to 100 pounds in the mountains. In India, rules from 1965 limit what animals carry. A mule can carry 200 pounds there. A pony is limited to 100 pounds. In the US, the Army says a mule can carry 20 percent of its body weight. This might be about 200 pounds for a day in the mountains.

Pack animals are still useful in our world today. They are used in the tourist industry in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco. Tourists can go on expeditions with the help of animals. Some National Parks in America also allow them.

Even special forces in the military use them. They might use horses, mules, camels, or even elephants. These animals help people reach places that are hard to get to.
