Most people use a square sheet of paper. These sheets might have patterns or two different colors. Modern folders like to use only folds. They usually do not use glue or scissors. This makes the finished shape feel very special.

There are two main ways to fold paper in Japan. One way is called "origata," or ceremonial origami.

People use these folds for religious ceremonies at Shinto shrines. They also use them to wrap gifts or money. Some shapes are geometric, like the "noshi" used at feasts. Other shapes look like butterflies for weddings.

These folds follow special rules of etiquette. They help show respect during important life events.

The other way is recreational origami, which is for fun.

This kind of folding creates shapes that look like real things. The Japanese paper crane is the most famous model.

In 1797, a book called "Hiden senbazuru orikata" was published. It was the first technical book for play origami. A monk named Gido created 49 pieces for this book. His work was very advanced for that time. Today, some of these methods are protected treasures in Kuwana City.

Different parts of the world have their own folding stories.

Europe had a tradition of folding fancy napkins. In the 1800s, Japan began using German ideas about folding. This included using a square piece of paper. They also started a rule against cutting the paper. This helped create the modern style we see today. In the 1900s, artists like Akira Yoshizawa made big changes. He created new ways to fold and draw designs. His work helped the art grow all over the world.

Today, origami is much more than just a simple craft.
