Model aircraft are small versions of real or imagined planes.

People build them for many reasons. Some build them for fun or to show off. Others use them for serious research. There are two main groups of models. These are flying models and non-flying models. Non-flying models are also called static or shelf models.

They are great for looking at or learning about history.

Building a model can happen in many ways. Static models often come in kits made of plastic.

These kits use injection-molded polystyrene. This is a way to melt plastic pellets into liquid. The liquid is forced into steel molds under high pressure. This makes many identical parts very quickly. Some people build models from scratch using wood or metal. Flying models must be very light and strong.

Builders use balsa wood, foam, or even thin tissue paper. Some even use carbon fiber to make them tough.

Model making has a long and interesting history. In 1932, a company called Skybirds introduced the 1:72 scale.

This scale became very popular later on. During the Second World War, the US War Department used it too. They wanted people to learn how to recognize real planes. They used 1:72 scale for single-engine planes. They used 1:144 scale for planes with many engines. This helped people learn through practice and play.

There are many specific sizes called scales for these models.

A scale like 1:48 means one inch equals four feet. Some models are huge, while others are tiny. Plastic kits often come in sizes like 1:72 or 1:24. Metal models can be as small as 1:600 scale. Airlines sometimes use large models to promote their business. They might give them to officials or travel agencies. These models help celebrate new flight paths or big achievements.

Flying models use different ways to stay in the air.

Some are free-flight models that fly on their own. Others use control lines, which are strings tied to a pivot. These models fly in circles around the person holding them.

Modern models use radio controllers to send signals. A receiver in the plane hears the signal from a transmitter. This moves small parts called servos to steer the plane. Some even use computers to help them fly smoothly. This is how many modern quadcopters work today.
