These miniatures can represent many different things. You might find racing cars, buses, or heavy trucks. Some models show specialized service vehicles like fire engines. You can even find military equipment like rocket launchers. There are also models of construction tools like bulldozers. People enjoy these models because they capture the look of real machines.

Making these models involves many different steps and materials. Early models were often made of lead, brass, or even clay. In the early 1900s, makers used plaster or iron. Later, they used tin and pressed steel. By the late 1930s, a metal called zamak became popular. This is a mix of zinc, aluminum, magnesium, and copper.

Today, many models are made of plastic or diecast metal. Some models are very simple with only a few parts. Others are complex with working parts like moving doors.

History shows that models have been around for a long time. Miniature cars first appeared in Europe when real cars were new. Soon, they appeared in the United States too. In the 1920s, car companies used models for design. Citroën in France made models for promotion in 1923. General Motors even held a competition for modelers from 1930 to 1968. This helped people learn to be professional car designers.

Models come in many different sizes called scales. A scale tells you how much smaller the model is than the real car. For example, a 1:25 scale model is 6 to 7 inches long.

In Europe, 1:18 scale models are common and about 9 inches long. Some tiny toys are even as small as 1:120 scale. This means they are just over one inch long. Different companies choose different scales to fit their needs. Some make small cars to fit in many boxes. Others make large models to show off fine details.

Collectors and hobbyists around the world enjoy these miniatures. Building model kits became a popular hobby in the 1950s. By 1970, more adults started collecting them as well.

Today, China is a major center for making diecast models. Whether for play or for display, models connect us to the world of machines.
