An aircraft is any vehicle built to fly in the air.

These machines must fight against gravity to stay up. Some aircraft use buoyancy to float like a ship on water. These are called aerostats. They use large cells filled with gases like helium or hot air.

Because these gases are less dense than the air, the craft stays aloft. Other aircraft are heavier than the air around them. These must find a way to create lift to fly.

There are different ways that lift happens. One way is through an airfoil, which is a special wing shape.

When air flows past this shape, it creates upward force. Fixed-wing aircraft, like airplanes or gliders, move forward to make this happen. Gliders are unique because they fly without any engine.

Another way to fly is using a rotor. A rotor is a set of blades that spins around a mast.

This is how rotorcraft, such as helicopters, generate lift.

Humans have dreamed of flight for thousands of years. People in China used kites for flight many centuries before the common era.

In the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci drew designs for flying machines. However, people did not have the right tools to build them then. In the late 1700s, the Montgolfier brothers invented the hot-air balloon. This led to the first manned flights in balloons. Later, Sir George Cayley helped develop the science of aerodynamics. He was the first to discover the four major forces of flight.

Important milestones changed how we travel through the sky. In 1903, the Wright brothers flew the first successful airplane.

By 1909, aircraft began to look more like the planes we see today. Ferdinand von Zeppelin pioneered large, steerable airships.

After World War II, jet engines changed everything for travelers. These engines made flight much faster and more reliable. Today, we even use pilotless drones for many different jobs.

Aircraft come in many different sizes and shapes. The Airlander 10 is a huge hybrid blimp. It can stay in the air for two weeks. The Antonov An-225 Mriya was the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built.

It was a Soviet-built plane with six engines. It held records for carrying the heaviest loads. You can see how aircraft relate to things you know. A helicopter's rotor works like a spinning fan to push air. An airship floats just like a boat on a lake.
