A rocket is a long flying vehicle.

It uses a rocket engine to move very fast. This engine creates thrust by pushing out exhaust at high speeds.

Unlike jet engines, rockets do not need air to work. They carry all their own fuel and oxygen, which is called propellant. This means they can fly in the vacuum of space. In fact, they work even better outside our atmosphere.

How does a rocket work? It uses a thing called combustion.

In a chemical rocket, fuel burns with an oxidizer. This creates a high-speed exhaust. Some rockets use two liquids that react when they touch. Others use a solid mix of fuel and oxidizer. Some even use a hybrid system with both. This process releases a huge amount of stored energy. This energy pushes the rocket forward.

Rockets have been around for a very long time. People in China used gunpowder rockets by the 13th century.

The Mongols spread this technology to the Middle East and Europe. In the late 1700s, the Kingdom of Mysore in India made iron-cased rockets.

Later, Sir William Congreve made British rockets in 1804. These were used in the Napoleonic Wars. These early rockets helped people learn how to fly much further.

Modern space travel grew in the 20th century. Robert Goddard used liquid fuel in 1926.

He added a special nozzle to make engines much better. In 1943, Germany began making the V-2 rocket.

The V-2 was the first object to reach space. Later, the Soviet Union used rockets like the Katyusha.

These steps led to the Space Age.

Today, we use rockets for many important jobs. We use them to launch artificial satellites into orbit.

We also use them for human spaceflight.

Rockets help us explore the Moon and other planets. Some rockets are small and used for fireworks. Others are huge and used for scientific missions. Rockets connect our world to the stars above.
