A spacecraft is a vehicle built to fly and work in outer space.

Most spacecraft cannot get into space on their own. They need a launch vehicle, which is a large carrier rocket. Some trips are sub-orbital. This means the vehicle enters space but does not have enough speed to stay there. Other flights are orbital. These spacecraft enter a closed path, called an orbit, around the Earth or other objects.

Some spacecraft are crewed, meaning they carry people. Others are robotic and work without humans on board. Some of these robotic crafts are space telescopes that look at far-off objects. Others are space probes that explore deep space.

How these machines work depends on their mission. Robotic spacecraft can be controlled by people from Earth. They can also be autonomous. This means they have a list of tasks they do on their own. Some spacecraft are designed to carry cargo like food or fuel. These help keep space stations running.

Other crafts are communications satellites. They relay radio signals around the curve of the Earth. This allows us to use the internet and watch television. Some satellites stay in a geostationary orbit. This means they stay over the same spot in the sky. This makes it easy for antennas on the ground to find them.

Humans have been reaching for the stars for a long time. The first spacecraft was a German V-2 rocket. It reached an altitude of 189 km in June 1944. The first artificial satellite was Sputnik 1. The Soviet Union launched it on 4 October 1957. It orbited the Earth every 96.2 minutes. This event marked the start of the Space Age.

Later, humans began flying in space. Yuri Gagarin was the first person in space. He flew on the Vostok 1 in 1961. Alan Shepard was the second person to fly. He used the Freedom 7 spacecraft in 1961.

Many different nations and companies work in space today. Only a few nations can launch orbital spacecraft. These include Russia, the United States, China, Japan, and India. Other nations like Israel, Iran, and North Korea also have this technology. Private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are also building new technology. Some spacecraft are expendable, meaning they are used only once. Others are reusable. The Space Shuttle was a reusable spaceplane.

The SpaceX Dragon 2 is another example of a reusable craft. Many modern space agencies now prefer to use reusable tools.

Spacecraft help us understand our place in the universe. Space probes have visited every planet in our solar system. Some probes are even leaving the solar system entirely. The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes were launched in 1977. They used the gravity of planets like Jupiter to move faster. Voyager 1 is traveling at a very high speed.

Other probes, like New Horizons, travel into deep space. Spacecraft also help us study the Sun. The Parker Solar Probe orbits very close to the Sun. These machines act like our eyes and hands in the dark reaches of space.
