A spacecraft is a vehicle made to fly in space.

Most spacecraft cannot reach space alone. They need a launch vehicle, which is a carrier rocket. Some flights are sub-orbital. This means the craft enters space but does not stay in orbit. Other flights are orbital. These crafts travel in a closed path around Earth or other bodies.

Some spacecraft carry people. These are crewed spacecraft. The first human in space was Yuri Gagarin. He flew on the Vostok 1 in 1961. Other crafts carry cargo. These are robotic spacecraft that work without people. They can go to places that are too far or too dangerous for humans.

Some robotic crafts are space telescopes. They look at far away objects in space. Others are space probes. These explore deep space. Some probes, like Voyager 1, are even leaving our solar system.

Some crafts are reusable. This means they can be used many times. The Space Shuttle was one example. Others are expendable. This means they are used only once.
