Most satellites are spacecraft. They use rockets to reach space. Once they are there, they move in a path called an orbit.

Satellites help us in many ways. Some help us talk to people far away. They act like relay stations. Others watch the weather or map the Earth. Some even help with GPS, which is how we find our way.

Most satellites need power to work. Many use solar panels to catch light from the sun. They also use transponders to talk to ground stations on Earth. These are tools that send and receive signals.

Satellites come in all sizes. The International Space Station is the largest satellite.

Other satellites are very small. We call these small ones CubeSats. Some satellites work in groups. These groups are called constellations.

The first artificial satellite was Sputnik 1. The Soviet Union launched it in 1957. Since then, many countries have sent satellites into space.
