A communications satellite is a tool in space. It helps us talk to people far away.

Radio waves travel in a straight line. But the Earth is round. This curve can block a signal from reaching its goal. A satellite sits high above the curve. It catches a signal and sends it back down. This creates a path for information to travel.

We use these satellites for TV, phones, and the internet. Some satellites use a transponder. This is a part that makes the signal stronger.

Some satellites stay in a geostationary orbit. This means they stay over one spot on Earth. They seem to stand still in the sky. This makes it easy to aim antennas at them.

Other satellites stay in a low Earth orbit. They fly much closer to our world. They move very fast around the Earth. Because they move, we need many of them in a group. This group is called a constellation.
