Most satellites stay in a geostationary orbit. This means they circle the Earth at the same rate the Earth spins. Because of this, the satellite stays in one fixed spot in the sky. Your dish can point at it all the time. It does not have to move to track the satellite.

The satellite has parts called transponders. These catch the signal and change its frequency. This change is called translation. This step helps avoid interference. Then, the satellite sends the signal back down to Earth. This part is called the downlink.

Your home dish catches the weak signal. A part called an LNB sits at the dish's focal point. The LNB makes the signal stronger. It then sends it to your receiver. This box turns the signal into the shows you watch.
