Satellite television is a way to bring shows directly to your home from space.

It is very helpful for people living in remote areas. These places might not have cable or regular ground signals. The service works by sending programs to a satellite orbiting the Earth. The satellite then sends those signals back down to your location.

This allows for a wide range of different channels and services.

The whole thing works through a series of careful steps. First, a large antenna at an uplink facility sends a signal up. These uplink dishes are huge to help with aiming and signal strength. The signal travels to a transponder on the satellite. A transponder is a part that catches the signal and changes its frequency. This change is called translation, and it helps avoid interference.

Then, the signal travels back to Earth in a step called the downlink.

Most satellites use a geostationary orbit above the Earth's equator. This is a very clever way to stay in place. In this orbit, the satellite circles the Earth at the same rate the Earth rotates. Because of this, the satellite looks like it stays in one fixed spot. Your home dish can be aimed at that one spot permanently. It does not need to move to track a moving satellite. Some other systems use a Molniya orbit, which is a different shape.

Technology has changed a lot over the years. Early systems used analog signals and large C-band dishes. These dishes were often 2 to 3 meters wide. People called them "big dish" systems because they were so large. Modern systems use digital signals and smaller Ku-band dishes. These dishes are often less than one meter in diameter. Digital signals are better because they allow for high-definition television.

One of the last analog satellites was Star One D2 from Brazil.

At home, your dish collects the weak signal from space. A device called an LNB sits at the dish's focal point. The LNB makes the signal stronger and changes it to a lower frequency. This makes it easier to send through a cable to your receiver. The receiver, or set-top box, then turns the signal into the video you see.

Some channels are free-to-air, while others require a monthly fee. It is a big system that connects the ground to the stars.
