Cable television

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cable television is a way to bring many shows to your home. It uses special wires to send signals to your house. Most systems use coaxial cables to carry these signals. Newer systems use fiber-optic cables that send pulses of light.

This is different from regular TV that uses antennas. It is also different from satellite TV that uses dishes on roofs. These cables can carry more than just TV shows. They can also provide high-speed Internet and telephone services.

How does the signal travel to your living room? It starts at a local center called a headend. At the headend, many channels are sent out at once. Each channel gets its own frequency slot. This is called frequency division multiplexing. It keeps the signals from getting mixed up.

In many modern systems, the signal travels through fiber-optic trunklines first. These lines carry the signal to local neighborhoods. At an optical node, the light turns back into an electrical signal. Then, coaxial cables carry the signal to your home.

Cable television has a long history. The very first networks started in 1936. They were operated in London and Berlin. These early networks helped people in places with bad signals. In the United States, it became a business in the 1950s. At first, it was called community antenna television, or CATV.

In 1968, only 6.4% of Americans had cable. By 1988, more than half of all households used it. By 1994, that number grew to 62.4%.

To watch digital channels, you often need a set-top box.

This box connects to the jack in your wall. It then connects to your television. Many digital channels are encrypted, which means they are scrambled. The box unscrambles the signal so you can see the picture. Some companies also use a splitter to send signals to different rooms.

This allows each TV in your house to have its own box. This way, people can watch different shows at the same time.

Cable systems are part of your everyday life. They connect your home to the wider world. You might use the same cables for your computer and your phone. Most companies use a hybrid fiber-coaxial system today. This combines the speed of light with the strength of copper wires. It allows for many channels, sometimes as many as 500. This technology helps keep us connected to news and movies.
