Telecommunication is a way to share information over a distance.

We use electricity or radio waves to do this. This helps us send sounds, writing, or pictures. Long ago, people used many different ways to send news.

Some used homing pigeons to carry messages. Others used beacon fires on hills to send signals.

Later, inventors made tools that used electric power. Samuel Morse and others made the telegraph. Alexander Graham Bell helped make the telephone. These tools used metal wires to carry signals.

Then, people found ways to send news without wires. Guglielmo Marconi used radio waves to send messages through the air. This helped ships hear news from far away. Later, inventors like John Logie Baird showed moving pictures on a television.

Today, we use even faster ways to share. We use optical fibre, which are thin glass strings that carry light.

We also use the Internet to reach the whole world. This lets us share huge amounts of data very quickly.
