Telegraphy is a way to send messages over long distances. Instead of passing an object, people use special codes.

Long ago, people used signals like fire or drums. In China, the Great Wall had signal towers.

These towers used smoke or light to send news. However, they could only send set messages. They could not send any text someone wrote.

Claude Chappe made the first true telegraph. It was an optical telegraph. This used towers with moving parts called semaphore.

People watched the shapes to read the news. This worked well in France. But it needed daylight and good weather. It was also quite slow.

Later, the electric telegraph changed everything. It used electricity to send messages. Samuel Morse made a famous system. It used Morse code to send any message.

This was much faster than the old ways. People sent messages called telegrams. Later, new tools like the telephone and the internet arrived. These new ways made the telegraph go away.
