Most trips are uncrewed. This means no people are on board. These trips use satellites to orbit Earth. Some use space probes to visit other planets.

To reach space, we use rockets. Rockets provide thrust, which is a powerful push. This push helps the rocket fight gravity. Most rockets use many stages. A stage is a large part of a rocket. The first stage carries the rocket up. Then, it falls away. The second stage ignites to go even higher. This helps the craft reach a high speed. At this speed, the craft falls around Earth. This is called being in orbit.

Some missions carry people to space stations. People live on the International Space Station to do science.

Astronauts must perform a rendezvous to reach a station. A rendezvous is a way to meet in orbit. They then dock, or join, with the station. This lets them move inside. Spaceflight helps us learn about our world and beyond.
