Some ships go to space without people. These are called uncrewed spacecraft.

These ships are great for science. They can visit places that are too hot for humans. They can also reach far planets like Neptune. These planets are too distant for people to visit now.

Uncrewed ships can be controlled from Earth. Some follow a list of jobs on their own. This is called autonomy. They can also be cleaned very well. This helps keep other planets safe from Earth germs.

Spacecraft have many important parts. A "bus" is the main frame. It holds the power and tools. Engines help the ship move. This is called propulsion. Most engines use rockets. A rocket works by letting out heat and gas. This pushes the ship forward.

Many countries have sent ships to space. The first was Sputnik 1 in 1957. The United States sent Explorer 1 in 1958. It found the Van Allen belts. These are zones of energy around Earth.
