It was a special mission from the Soviet Union. Before this, many Moon trips failed. Luna 9 was the first to land softly. This means it did not crash hard.

The craft used a clever way to land. It had a landing bag filled with air. This bag helped it survive the impact. When it touched the ground, the capsule popped out. It bounced a few times in a place called Oceanus Procellarum.

After it landed, the machine sent back news. It sent nine images to Earth. These photos showed rocks and the Moon's horizon. People also learned something very important. They found out the Moon dust was strong. It could hold the weight of a lander. The craft did not sink into the dust. This proved the ground was solid enough for more trips.
