It was the first human-made object to touch another world. It hit the Moon on September 14, 1959. This was a very big moment in the Space Race.

The probe traveled on a direct path to the Moon. It carried many tools to study space. It had a magnetometer to measure magnetic fields. It also had counters to find radiation. Radiation is a type of energy that moves through space.

Before it hit the surface, the probe did something cool. It let out a cloud of sodium vapor. This cloud helped people see its movement. The probe also carried small metal shields called pennants.

These had the name of the Soviet Union on them. When the probe hit the Moon, it sent these shields out in all directions. Luna 2 showed that there were no large magnetic belts around the Moon.
