The Soviet Union sent it to the Moon in 1970. A spacecraft called Luna 17 carried it there.

The rover had eight wheels. Each wheel had its own motor to make it move. It used solar cells to get power from the sun. These cells helped it charge its batteries during the day. At night, the rover stayed still. It used a heater to stay warm in the cold.

Lunokhod 1 was very busy. It used four cameras to take many pictures. It also used tools to study the Moon soil. The rover was meant to work for three months. But it worked for 321 Earth days! It drove a total of 10.54 km.

As it drove, it passed small craters. People gave these craters names like Albert and Leonid. Today, we can still find the rover. Scientists use a laser to find it.
