Lunokhod 1

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Lunokhod 1 was a very special robot car. It was the first rover to drive on the Moon. This machine was the first to move freely on another world. The Soviet Union sent it to explore the lunar surface. It was part of a larger program called Lunokhod.

This mission was a huge step for science. It helped us learn about the Moon in new ways.

The rover worked in a very clever way. It had eight wheels that each had their own motor. To get energy, it used solar cells on its lid. These cells charged batteries during the lunar day. At night, the rover would hibernate to stay safe. It closed its lid and used a special heater to stay warm.

This kept the parts from getting too cold in the dark.

History tells us how this journey began. The Luna 17 spacecraft launched on November 10, 1970. It traveled toward the Moon for several days. The spacecraft entered lunar orbit on November 15, 1970. Then, it landed in a place called Mare Imbrium.

The rover drove down a ramp onto the Moon's surface. It began its work on November 17, 1970.

Lunokhod 1 was a very busy explorer. It was only meant to work for three lunar days. However, it lasted for eleven lunar days. That is about 321 Earth days of work. It traveled a total distance of 10.54 km. The rover took over 20,000 TV images and many panoramas.

It also studied the soil in 500 different spots. It even passed small craters named Albert, Leonid, and Vasya.

Today, scientists can still find the rover. It rests near a place called Leonid crater.

In 2010, researchers used images from a spacecraft to find it. They used lasers to measure exactly where it sits. The rover has a special reflector that sends light back to Earth. This tool helps scientists study the distance between Earth and the Moon. Even after many years, the rover still helps us learn.
