Scientists wanted to see how living things act in space. They needed to know about gravity and radiation. They used Laika to collect this data. They tracked her heart rate and her breathing.

Training Laika was a hard job. She had to learn to eat a special food gel. She also had to get used to small cages. This helped her get ready for the tiny cabin.

Laika's mission was a one-way trip. The technology to return from space was not ready yet. During the flight, the craft had a problem. The system that controls heat did not work right. This caused the cabin to get too hot. Laika died from the heat during her fourth orbit. Her mission helped scientists learn a lot about space. Many people around the world still remember her today.
