Luna 3

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

In 1959, a Soviet spacecraft named Luna 3 went to the Moon.

It was a very special mission. It was the first to photograph the far side of the Moon. This is the side that we cannot see from Earth.

Luna 3 used a special tool called the Yenisey-2 imaging system. This system had two lenses for its camera. The camera took 29 pictures over 40 minutes. These photos showed that the far side looks different. It has many mountains. It also has only two dark areas.

These dark areas are called maria, which means seas. One was named Mare Moscoviense. The other was Mare Desiderii.

To get home, the craft used a gravity assist. This is a way to change a path using gravity. The Moon's gravity pulled on the craft. This helped it fly back toward Earth.

The craft sent 17 pictures back to Earth. People all over the world were excited to see them. These new views helped make the first map of the far side.
