These machines were sent by the United States. The first part of the program ran from 1958 to 1960. These probes tried to reach the Moon. Some probes were lost or failed. However, one probe successfully flew by the Moon.

Another probe studied the space between Earth and Venus.

The second part of the program started in 1965. It lasted until 1992. Four probes studied space weather. Space weather is the conditions in space. Other probes explored the planets Jupiter and Saturn.

Two probes went to Venus, too.

Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 were very special. They reached escape velocity. This is the speed needed to leave our Solar System. They each carry a golden plaque. The plaque shows a man and a woman. It also shares info about who made the probes. This is in case aliens find them.
