It started in the early 1960s. The Soviet Union first used it. Now, Russia runs the program. The name Soyuz means "Union."

A Soyuz mission uses two main things. It uses a Soyuz rocket to fly up. It also uses a Soyuz spacecraft to carry people.

The spacecraft has three parts. The first is a round orbital module. The second is a small reentry module. This part helps the ship come back to Earth. The third is a long service module. This part has solar panels to catch light.

These rockets are very strong. They have worked for nearly sixty years. They carry people to the International Space Station. From 2011 to 2020, it was the only way to reach the station. The station always keeps one Soyuz parked there. This acts as an escape craft for the crew.

Soyuz also carries robotic ships called Progress. These ships bring supplies to space. The Soyuz design was so good that China used it to help make the Shenzhou spacecraft.
