The second part is the descent module. This is a small capsule. The crew sits here for launch and return. It has a heat shield to keep them safe. This shield protects them from heat during reentry.

Before the ship returns to Earth, it drops the first two parts. This makes the ship lighter. It helps the descent module land safely. The crew uses parachutes to slow down. Small engines then fire to give a soft landing. The Soyuz can carry up to three people. It can keep them alive for 30 days.
