Tiangong is a home in space.
It stays high above the Earth. People live there to do science.
It is made of different parts. These parts join together in space. This is called a modular design.
One part is the main home.
Other parts are for labs. These labs help people study science. They can study how plants grow. They also study how things move.
People can send food to the station. Special ships carry things up. This helps the people living there. They can stay for a long time.
This station helps us learn. It is a place for new ideas. It is a great tool for science.
Tiangong is a large home in space.
It is a space station built by China. It stays in low Earth orbit. This means it flies just above our planet. It is one of only two working space stations today.
The station uses a modular design. This means it is built from separate parts. These parts join together while they are in space.
The first part is the Tianhe core module. It launched on 29 April 2021. This part provides power and air for the crew. It also has a kitchen and a toilet.
Two other parts are for science. We call these laboratory modules. The Wentian module launched in July 2022. The Mengtian module launched in October 2022.
These labs help people study life and physics. Scientists can study how plants grow in space. They can also study how things move without gravity. This helps us learn how to explore deep space. China plans to add more parts to the station soon.
The Tiangong space station is a permanent home for people in space.
It is built and operated by the China Manned Space Agency. This station stays in low Earth orbit, which is just above our planet. It is a very important place for new scientific discoveries. Currently, it is one of only two working space stations in our world.
It helps scientists learn how to live and work far from Earth.
Tiangong uses a modular design to work.
This means the station is made of separate pieces that join together in orbit. The Tianhe core module is the main part of the station. It provides power, air, and a place for three crew members to live. It even has a kitchen and a toilet for the astronauts.
The station also uses a large robotic arm called the Chinarm to help move things around.
China built this station using lessons from older projects.
Before this big station, there were smaller labs called Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2. The first part of the new station, the Tianhe module, launched on 29 April 2021. Then, two science labs were added to the group. The Wentian lab launched on 24 July 2022. The Mengtian lab launched on 31 October 2022.
These steps helped turn the station into a complete home.
There are many specific parts and numbers to know about the station.
The Tianhe core module holds the main computers and navigation systems. The Wentian module has 22 spots for experiments on its outside. The Mengtian module has 37 spots for experiments on its outside.
There are over 1,000 different experiments planned for the station. Scientists use these to study things like how rice grows in space. They also study how liquids and fire behave without gravity.
Tiangong connects to our lives in many ways.
It helps teach students about science through special space lessons. Astronauts even answer questions from school children in China. The station also uses radio to let people talk to the crew. This helps inspire more people to study science and math.
By studying life in space, we learn how to explore the deep universe.
The Tiangong space station is a permanently crewed laboratory in low Earth orbit.
Operated by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), it serves as a platform for scientific and technological innovation. The station is a modular complex, meaning it is built from separate parts that dock together in space. This design allows for complex assembly and future expansion. Currently, Tiangong is one of only two operational space stations in human history. Its pressurized volume is slightly over one third the size of the International Space Station (ISS).
Tiangong functions through a sophisticated modular mechanism. Unlike first-generation stations, which were single-module outposts, Tiangong is a third-generation modular station. This means multiple components are launched separately and assembled in orbit. This method improves reliability and reduces development costs. The station relies on the Chinese Docking Mechanism to connect its parts. This system is based on the APAS-89/APAS-95 technology developed by NASA and Russia. Once docked, the modules create a single, pressurized environment for the crew.
The station is currently composed of three primary modules. The Tianhe core module is the central hub. It houses the guidance, navigation, and orientation control systems. It also provides life support, main power, and propulsion for the entire station. The Tianhe module includes living quarters for three crew members, a kitchen, and a toilet.
The Wentian laboratory module was launched on 24 July 2022. It provides backup life support and includes an airlock for extravehicular activities (EVAs). The Mengtian laboratory module launched on 31 October 2022. It features a dedicated cargo airlock for transferring scientific payloads.
China developed Tiangong through a planned multi-step process. This is known as the "Third Step" of the China Manned Space Program. The agency gained vital experience from two earlier precursors, Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2. These earlier labs helped test docking and resupply technologies. The construction of the permanent station began with the launch of Tianhe on 29 April 2021.
Following the core module, the Wentian and Mengtian modules were added to complete the initial three-module configuration in 2022. Plans exist to expand the station to six modules starting in 2027.
Scientific research is the primary mission of the station. CMSA has tentatively approved over 1,000 experiments to be conducted in orbit. The station contains 23 experimental racks within its pressurized environment.
These racks allow for studies in life sciences, biotechnology, and material science. For example, scientists study how rice and Arabidopsis thaliana grow in microgravity. This research helps find sustainable food sources for long-term spaceflight. The modules also allow for experiments exposed to the vacuum and solar wind of space. Wentian provides 22 external experiment adapters, while Mengtian provides 37.
Beyond pure science, Tiangong serves as a tool for education and outreach. The station hosts space lectures and popular science experiments. These lessons are designed to inspire students in science and technology. During the Shenzhou 13 and 14 missions, astronauts conducted lessons that included Q&A sessions with schoolchildren.
Additionally, the CSSARC amateur radio payload allows radio enthusiasts to communicate with astronauts. This project aims to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It even includes digital image transmission and voice communication via the VHF/UHF bands.
Tiangong is deeply connected to broader goals of deep space exploration. By mastering rendezvous technology and regenerative life support, China builds capacity for future missions. The station also acts as a testbed for next-generation orbit transportation vehicles. CMSA is even considering the possibility of space tourism in the future. This would involve commercial activities led by the private sector to bring cost-effective innovations to space. As a permanent human presence in orbit, Tiangong helps humanity understand how to live and work far from Earth.
