Mir was the first modular space station. This means it was built in parts. Engineers sent many parts up on rockets. These parts joined together in space from 1986 to 1996.

At first, the Soviet Union ran the station. Later, the Russian Federation took over. People from many nations visited too. They used the station as a lab. Crews studied biology and physics. They also studied stars and the weather.

Large solar arrays gave the station power from the sun. Mir moved very fast. It went around the Earth about 15 times every day. The station stopped working in 2001. It fell back to Earth in March 2001.
