A space capsule is a special spacecraft.

It carries astronauts or cargo to and from space. Capsules are different from other ships because they do not have wings. They have a blunt shape. This shape helps them survive reentry. Reentry is the way a ship moves back into Earth's air.

During reentry, the air gets very hot. This heat can create plasma. Plasma is a layer of hot gas that surrounds the capsule. This gas can block radio signals from the ground.

Some capsules use a heat shield to stay safe. The Mercury capsule used a shield made of fiberglass.

Some capsules are used only one time. These are called expendable. Other capsules can be used again. These are called reusable.

Many capsules use extra parts to help them work. For example, the Vostok capsule used a module for fuel and air. The Vostok was the first capsule to carry a person. Yuri Gagarin flew in Vostok 1 in 1961. He was the first human in space.
