Space suits help keep people safe and comfortable.

There are three main types of suits. IVA suits are for use inside a spacecraft. They are light and easy to wear. IEVA suits work both inside and outside. EVA suits are for walking in space. These are complex and provide life support.

An EVA suit must do many jobs. It gives the person oxygen to breathe. It also removes carbon dioxide. To stay cool, some suits use a Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment. This is a layer that touches the skin.

Space suits also stop tiny rocks. These are called micrometeoroids. They can travel very fast. The suit has a thick outer layer to stop them.
