Soyuz (spacecraft)

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Soyuz is a very famous series of spacecraft. It has been flying since the 1960s. This ship has made more than 140 flights so far. It was first made by the Korolev Design Bureau. It was meant to help with early moon programs. Today, it is used by the Russian space agency, Roscosmos. For many years, it was the only way to reach the International Space Station.

The ship works by using three main sections. First is the orbital module, which is a room for living. It holds food, cameras, and even a toilet. Second is the descent module, which is a small capsule. This is where the crew sits during launch and return. Third is the service module, which provides power and movement. During reentry, the ship drops the first two parts. This makes the craft lighter so it can land safely.

Learning how to fly safely took a long time. The first unmanned flight was on 28 November 1966. The first crewed flight, Soyuz 1, launched on 23 April 1967. Sadly, the parachute failed to open during that mission. Another hard time happened during the Soyuz 11 flight. The cabin lost its air during reentry, and the crew died. These were the only humans known to die above the Kármán line. The Kármán line is the edge of space.

Engineers built a special tool to keep people safe. It is called a launch escape system, or SAS. This system can pull the crew away if a rocket fails. Designers worked on this starting in 1962. They studied many ways a rocket might break. The SAS has stayed mostly the same for 50 years. It worked well in October 2018. During the Soyuz MS-10 flight, it rescued the crew. This happened 2 minutes and 45 seconds after liftoff.

You can think of the Soyuz as a sturdy cosmic taxi. It carries up to three crew members at once. It can provide life support for about 30 person-days. The descent module has a special shape like a headlight. This shape helps it steer a little bit during reentry. It uses a heat shield to stay cool. When it gets close to the ground, small engines fire. This gives the crew a soft landing on Earth.
