It is the largest space launch facility in the world by area. Russia operates the site and manages many different missions. These include scientific, military, and commercial flights. Russia has controlled the site since the Soviet Union ended in 1991. They signed an agreement to lease the land until the year 2050.

This place is a vital link for reaching outer space.

Building this spaceport was a very big task. The site sits in the wide Kazakh Steppe.

Leaders chose this spot for several important reasons. The area had flat plains that allowed for radio signals. These signals needed to travel hundreds of kilometers to reach ground stations. The site also needed to be far from crowded towns. Being closer to the equator helps rockets launch more easily. This is because the Earth spins faster at the equator. The project required many new roads and train lines.

History began here in the middle of the 1950s. The Soviet Union founded the site in June 1955.

It was first meant to test the R-7 Semyorka missile. A group led by General Vasily Voznyuk chose the location. Sergey Korolyov also helped pick the site for his work. The site saw many famous firsts in space history. It launched Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite, in 1957. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space from here. His launch pad was later named Gagarin's Start to honor him.

Many different rockets and spacecraft have used these pads.

The site has supported the Soyuz, Proton, and Zenit rockets. It also helped launch the Buran space shuttle. Many people from different nations have launched from here. For example, 14 cosmonauts from 13 different countries used the Interkosmos program. The site is also used for missions to the International Space Station. However, using the site has caused some problems for the environment. Some rocket fuel is very toxic to living things. This has caused issues for the local plants and animals.

Today, the future of the spaceport is changing. Some parts of the site might become a museum soon. This would allow people to visit the history of space travel. The site has seen many changes over the decades. It went from a secret test range to a famous spaceport. Even though Russia is building new sites, Baikonur remains very important. It connects our world to the stars through many different missions. It is a place where history and science meet every day.
