Learning how to fly safely took a long time. The first unmanned flight was on 28 November 1966. The first crewed flight, Soyuz 1, launched on 23 April 1967. Sadly, the parachute failed to open during that mission. Another hard time happened during the Soyuz 11 flight. The cabin lost its air during reentry, and the crew died. This specific shape allows the capsule to generate a small amount of lift during reentry. This lift helps the crew steer slightly, rather than having a purely ballistic reentry. Half of the module is covered by a heat-resistant thermal protection system. This system includes an ablator made of a glass-phenolic composite.
