A Soyuz mission uses two main things. It uses a Soyuz rocket to fly up. It also uses a Soyuz spacecraft to carry people.
These rockets are very strong. They have worked for nearly sixty years. They carry people to the International Space Station. From 2011 to 2020, it was the only way to reach the station. The station always keeps one Soyuz parked there. This acts as an escape craft for the crew. 
The Soyuz programme is a famous way to travel into space. The name Soyuz means "Union" in Russian. It began in the early 1960s during the Soviet Union era. Today, the programme is run by Russia through an agency called Roscosmos. 
A Soyuz mission uses a rocket and a spacecraft. The spacecraft has three main parts that work together. First, there is a round orbital module at the front. Next is a small reentry module that helps the ship return to Earth.
Many people helped make the Soyuz a reality. A man named Sergei Pavlovich Korolev was the Chief Designer. He led the early civilian designs for the craft. He did not live to see the first flight take place. 
Soyuz has a very long history of successful missions. It has been used at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It also launches from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northwest Russia. Since 2011, launches have even happened at the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana. 
You might know the International Space Station, or ISS. Soyuz played a huge role in visiting this station. From 2011 until May 2020, it was the only way for humans to reach the ISS. The station always keeps one Soyuz parked there as an escape craft. 
The Soyuz programme is a major human spaceflight initiative. The name Soyuz means "Union" in Russian. It began in the early 1960s under the Soviet Union. Today, the programme is managed by the Russian agency Roscosmos. 
A Soyuz mission relies on a specific spacecraft design. The spacecraft consists of three distinct parts arranged from front to back. First is a spheroid orbital module. This is the front section of the craft. Next is a small aerodynamic reentry module. This part is designed to help the craft return to Earth.
The original goal for the Soyuz was quite ambitious. Designers wanted to send cosmonauts to the Moon. One early plan involved repeatedly docking with upper stages in orbit. These stages would be put into orbit using the same Soyuz rocket. This method was meant to avoid using massive boosters like the Saturn V. Sergei Pavlovich Korolev served as the Soviet Chief Designer. He led these early civilian designs. Sadly, he did not live to see the craft fly.
Many different versions of the spacecraft have been proposed or built. Some were meant for military use, while others were for scientific research. For example, the Zond spacecraft was designed for crewed lunar trips. In September 1968, Zond 5 circled the Moon. It carried two tortoises and other life forms. It returned safely to Earth, though the atmospheric entry was very intense. 
The Soyuz rocket family is also highly versatile. The launch vehicles are manufactured at the Progress State Research and Production Rocket Space Center in Samara, Russia. These rockets do more than just carry people. They also launch robotic Progress supply spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). Some launches are even operated by the Starsem company. The rockets are launched from several locations. These include the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia. 
Reliability is a key feature of the Soyuz programme. As of December 2019, nineteen launches from the Guiana Space Centre were all successful. The Soyuz played a critical role for the International Space Station. After the Space Shuttle retired in 2011, Soyuz was the only way to reach the ISS. This continued until May 30, 2020, when the Crew Dragon flew to the station. Because of this, the ISS always keeps at least one Soyuz docked. It serves as an escape craft for the crew.
The influence of the Soyuz design extends across the globe. The Chinese Shenzhou spacecraft follows the basic template pioneered by Soyuz. Furthermore, the Progress series of cargo ships uses the same layout as the Soyuz. They use the engine section, orbital module, and docking mechanisms. However, the Progress ships cannot perform reentry like the crewed versions. The Soyuz programme remains a fundamental part of how we interact with space. It connects decades of history to our current life in orbit.
