A man named Yuri was the first person in space. He flew in a small ship. He went around the Earth one time.
Before people flew, they sent animals into space. Two dogs named Belka and Strelka went up. They came back home safely.
This helped the workers learn how to keep people safe. They used ships that could come back down.
Space travel was a very big deal for the world.
The Vostok programme was a Soviet plan to send people into space. 
Soviet leaders wanted to be the first to put a human in orbit. They used a large rocket called the R-7 to launch their ships. Before people flew, they sent animals to test the way. Two dogs named Belka and Strelka were the first living things to return safely from orbit. Their success gave workers the confidence to try a human flight.
On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space. He flew in a ship called Vostok 1. He traveled around the Earth one time. To prepare, twenty men were chosen to be cosmonauts. These were the people trained to fly in space. They had to be fit and smart. They studied things like stars and how rockets work.
The Vostok programme had six crewed flights between 1961 and 1963. Some flights lasted a long time. One flight lasted nearly five days. This was much longer than the flights made by the United States at that time. The Vostok ships were later replaced by the Voskhod programme.

The Vostok programme was a Soviet spaceflight project designed to achieve two major goals. First, it aimed to place Soviet cosmonauts into low Earth orbit. Second, it sought to return those humans safely to the ground. This project was a direct competitor to the United States' Project Mercury. The programme eventually succeeded in placing the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into orbit on April 12, 1961. Between 1961 and 1963, the programme completed six crewed spaceflights. This work was essential for establishing the Soviet Union as a leader in space exploration.
To reach space, engineers had to adapt existing technology for new purposes. The launch vehicle was an adaptation of the R-7 Semyorka, which was an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The Vostok spacecraft itself was developed from the Zenit spy satellite project. Engineers created several different versions of the craft for various testing stages. They developed the Vostok 1K for testing and life-support purposes. They also created the Vostok 2K, which became the Zenit 2 spy satellite. The final version used for all six crewed missions was the Vostok 3K. 
Before humans could fly, the Soviets conducted several uncrewed preparatory missions. These early ships were called Korabl-Sputnik, which means "Satellite-ship." The first Korabl-Sputnik launched on May 15, 1960. It was a variant not designed for recovery. Later missions carried biological specimens to test the effects of space. The mission Korabl-Sputnik 2 carried mice, insects, and two dogs named Belka and Strelka. On August 19, 1960, these dogs became the first living beings to be recovered from orbit. Their successful return gave designers the confidence to plan for human flight.
Selecting the right people for these missions was a strict process. Chief designer Sergei Korolev set specific physical requirements for the candidates. Men had to be between 25 and 30 years old. They could not be taller than 1.75 meters. They also could not weigh more than 72 kilograms. The Soviet Air Force insisted on selecting qualified pilots. They believed pilots would handle high g-forces and ejection seats better. By the end of 1959, twenty men were selected for training. These men moved to a dedicated training center in Star City.
Training was intense and involved many different scientific subjects. The cosmonauts studied rocket space systems, navigation, geophysics, and astronomy. They also practiced in a spacecraft simulator called the TDK-1. A special group known as the "Vanguard Six" underwent accelerated training. This group included Yuri Gagarin, Gherman Titov, Andrian Nikolayev, Valery Bykovsky, Pavel Popovich, and Vladimir Nelyubov. Some original members of this group were replaced due to medical issues. For example, Anatoli Kartashov was removed after experiencing internal hemorrhaging during a centrifuge test. Valentin Varlamov was also replaced after a swimming accident caused a displaced vertebra.
Managing these missions required a global network of communication. Because the Soviet Union is so large, ground stations alone could not monitor every flight. To solve this, the Soviets used about seven naval tracking ships stationed around the world. Even with this network, communication was often brief. Each ground station or ship only had between five and ten minutes of contact with an orbiting spacecraft. This made precise timing and automated systems very important for the success of the missions.
The Vostok programme demonstrated capabilities that exceeded those of its American rivals. While Project Mercury's longest flight lasted just over 34 hours, Vostok flights reached much higher durations. One Vostok flight lasted nearly five days. The programme also showed efficiency by launching the last four missions in pairs, just one day apart. These successes led to the Voskhod programme in 1964 and 1965. The Voskhod missions used modifications of the Vostok capsule to carry two or three people at once. This progression showed how the Vostok project laid the foundation for multi-person space travel.
