This was a major milestone for the Soviet Union. Because of this, he became a global star. He won many medals and titles. One was the Hero of the Soviet Union. This was his country's highest honor.

Yuri grew up in the village of Klushino. His parents worked on a farm. During a war, his family had a hard life. They lived in a small mud hut for 21 months. Later, Yuri worked at a steel plant. He loved math and science. He also loved planes. He joined a flying club to learn how to fly.

Yuri trained very hard to become a cosmonaut. He practiced jumping with a parachute. He also sat in a centrifuge. A centrifuge is a machine that spins very fast. It helps pilots feel the heavy pull of force. This training helped him get ready for space.

This mission was a huge milestone for the Soviet Union. Because of his success, Gagarin became an international celebrity. He was awarded many honors, including the Hero of the Soviet Union. This was the highest distinction in his country.

To prepare for space, Gagarin had to go through very hard training. He joined a group of six pilots called the Vanguard Six.

The training was as tough as preparing for the Olympic Games. He practiced parachute jumps over both land and water. He also had to face many different tests. One test involved an anechoic chamber, which is a room that is completely silent. He also used a centrifuge to learn how to handle g-forces. These are the heavy pulls that pilots feel during flight. He even took oxygen starvation tests in an isolation chamber.

Before he was an astronaut, Gagarin had a very different life. He was born on 9 March 1934 in the village of Klushino. His parents worked on a farm as a carpenter and a dairy farmer. During World War II, his family had a very difficult time. They had to live in a small mud hut for 21 months. Later, he worked as a foundryman at a steel plant in Lyubertsy.

Even then, he was always interested in planes and science. He even built model aeroplanes when he was young.

Many people helped Gagarin reach the stars. The chief engineer of the program was Sergei Korolev. A medical commission led by Major General Konstantin Borodin chose the candidates. They looked for pilots between the ages of 25 and 30. Gagarin was selected because he performed very well on his tests. In January 1961, he was given the official title of pilot-cosmonaut. He was ranked as the best candidate for the first mission. This helped him get chosen to fly Vostok 1.

Today, we remember Gagarin as a pioneer of space travel. His flight changed how we see our place in the universe.

We can see his legacy in many places. There is a statue of him in Greenwich. There is even a special coin made to honor his flight. He also helped lead the training center for other cosmonauts. His name is now attached to that center to honor his work. He showed the world that humans could leave our planet and travel into the great unknown.

Gagarin’s journey to space began with a very difficult childhood in the village of Klushino.

He was born on 9 March 1934 to a carpenter and a dairy farmer. During World War II, his family suffered under German occupation. The Nazis burned down the local school and many houses in his village. For 21 months, the Gagarin family lived in a small mud hut. During this time, Yuri even acted as a saboteur against German soldiers. His family faced hunger and hardship until the war ended in 1945. These early challenges shaped his resilience.

After the war, Gagarin moved to Gzhatsk to continue his education. He was always fascinated by aircraft and even built model aeroplanes. In 1950, he worked as an apprentice foundryman at a steel plant. He later studied tractors at an industrial school in Saratov. While there, he volunteered at a flying club to train as an air cadet.

This passion led him to the First Chkalov Higher Air Force Pilots School. He graduated in 1956 after training on MiG-15 aircraft. By 1959, he had accumulated 265 hours of flight time and expressed interest in space.

The selection process for the Soviet space programme was incredibly strict. A medical commission led by Major General Konstantin Borodin reviewed many candidates. They looked for pilots between the ages of 25 and 30. Chief engineer Sergei Korolev also set physical limits for the Vostok capsule. Candidates had to weigh less than 70 kilograms and be no taller than 170 centimeters. From 154 qualified pilots, only 29 were chosen as cosmonaut candidates. Gagarin was part of an accelerated group known as the Vanguard Six.

Training for space was as intense as preparing for the Olympic Games.

Gagarin performed 40 to 50 parachute jumps over land and water. He also underwent tests to check his physical and mental endurance. This included oxygen starvation tests in isolation chambers and using a centrifuge to experience g-forces. He even spent over a week in an anechoic chamber, which is a room that is completely silent. These tests ensured he could handle the extreme conditions of spaceflight. In January 1961, he was officially named a pilot-cosmonaut.

Gagarin was ultimately ranked as the best candidate for the first mission. A special commission used simulators and written exams to test readiness. After his flight, Gagarin served as the deputy training director for the Cosmonaut Training Centre. This centre was later named in his honor. He also held political roles in the Soviet of the Union and the Soviet of Nationalities. However, his career in space was limited. After his friend Vladimir Komarov died in the Soyuz 1 crash, officials banned Gagarin from further spaceflights to protect him.

Tragically, Gagarin’s life ended shortly after he returned to flying regular aircraft. In February 1968, he completed training at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy. Five weeks later, he was piloting a MiG-15 with instructor Vladimir Seryogin. The aircraft crashed near the town of Kirzhach, and Gagarin died.
