The Space Race was a big competition. 
The Soviet Union took an early lead. In 1957, they launched Sputnik 1. This was the first artificial satellite in space. 

This led the United States to set a new goal. President John F. Kennedy wanted to land a man on the Moon. The U.S. built a huge rocket called the Saturn V. In July 1969, the Apollo 11 mission reached the Moon. 
After many years of competing, the two nations began to work together. In 1975, they joined forces for a test project. This helped lead to the International Space Station we use today.

The V-2 was a liquid-fueled rocket developed by Nazi Germany during the war. 
Soviet rocket development began with early liquid-fueled experiments in the 1930s. Pioneers like Sergey Korolev led the creation of the R-7 Semyorka. The R-7 was a massive two-stage rocket with four boosters. It became the world's first true ICBM in August 1957. This same rocket family powered many famous Soviet missions. It launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, in October 1957. It also served as the basis for the Vostok and Soyuz launch vehicles.
In the United States, rocket science progressed through various military and civilian programs. Engineers like Wernher von Braun moved to the U.S. under Operation Paperclip. They worked at the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama to develop new missiles. The U.S. developed the Atlas missile, which used thin stainless steel tanks. These tanks relied on internal pressure to maintain their shape. This design helped reduce the overall weight of the rocket. Later, the U.S. built the Saturn V, a super heavy-lift vehicle. This massive rocket was powerful enough to send humans to the Moon. 
The competition produced many historic "firsts" for humanity. The Soviet Union achieved early success with Sputnik 1 in 1957. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. He completed an orbital flight aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft. 
The United States reached this lunar goal in July 1969. The Apollo 11 mission successfully landed humans on the Moon's surface. 

Eventually, the intense competition transitioned into a period of cooperation called détente. In April 1972, the two nations agreed to the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). This culminated in July 1975 when U.S. and Soviet spacecraft met in Earth orbit.
