Alongside Friedrich Zander, Korolev helped launch the first hybrid propellant rocket, the GIRD-09, in 1933. Shortly after, the group helped launch the GIRD-X, the first Soviet liquid-fueled rocket. These early successes led to the creation of the Reactive Scientific Research Institute (RNII). At RNII, Korolev worked on developing cruise missiles and rocket-powered gliders.
