Uncrewed spacecraft

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Uncrewed spacecraft are vehicles that travel through space without any people on board. These machines are vital for exploring our solar system. They can go to places that are too dangerous for humans. For example, Venus is far too hot for people to survive. Other planets like Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are just too far away. Current technology cannot carry humans that far, so we use robotic probes instead. These robots can also be cleaned to remove Earth germs. This keeps other planets safe from contamination.

To work well, a spacecraft needs many different systems. Scientists often call the main frame of the ship a bus. This bus holds the power and the tools. A spacecraft uses propulsion to move through the dark void. Most ships use rocket engines to create thrust. This works because of a rule called Newton's third law. When an engine releases heat and gas, it pushes the ship forward. Some ships use ion propulsion to move. This works by shooting electrons at atoms to make them move very fast.

Humans began sending these machines into space many years ago. The very first uncrewed mission was Sputnik, launched by the USSR in 1957. Before that, the Soviet Union sent two dogs, Dezik and Tsygan, on a flight in 1951. Later, the dog Laika became the first animal to orbit Earth on Sputnik 2. The United States joined the race in 1958 with Explorer 1. This ship was a long cylinder that helped scientists find the Van Allen belts. These are large zones of energy surrounding our planet.

Many different countries have now built their own spacecraft. France launched a satellite in 1965. Japan and China both succeeded in 1970. The United Kingdom sent one up in 1971, and India followed in 1980. Other nations like Israel, Iran, North Korea, and South Korea have also joined. These missions have reached many amazing places. Mariner 2 was the first to study another planet by looking at Venus. Later, Mariner 4 sent back the first pictures of the cratered surface of Mars.

Spacecraft are much more than just metal boxes in the sky. They use complex tools to talk to us on Earth. These tools include radio antennas and transmitters. They also need power to keep their computers running. Some ships use solar cells to catch light from the sun. Others use special generators to make electricity. When a robot lands on a planet, it must be very careful. It uses cameras to look for cliffs or big rocks. This helps the ship find a safe spot to land without breaking.
