Rocket artillery is a way of using rockets to hit targets.

This idea started a long time ago in medieval China. People used devices called fire arrows to fight. Some tools could launch hundreds of these arrows all at once.

These early rockets were often used to scare enemies. The noise and bright lights were very effective. People even moved these systems around using simple carts.

Over time, the way rockets were made changed a lot. In the 16th century, the Mughal Empire used metal casings. This helped the rockets stay dry in bad weather. Later, Tipu Sultan in South India used iron tubes.

These iron tubes held gunpowder very tightly. This gave the rockets more thrust and more range.

A rocket could fly almost 1,000 yards using this method. They were often strapped to long bamboo shafts to help them fly.

In 1801, the British began a special research program. A man named William Congreve led this work. He studied rockets brought from India to learn their secrets.

Congreve made the rockets better by using sticks to guide them. He also used machines to make the gunpowder very consistent. This helped the rockets fly much further than before. Some could even travel up to two miles.

His work even inspired the words in the US National Anthem.

By World War II, rocket artillery became very common again. The Soviet Union used rockets mounted on trucks.

Soldiers called these rockets Katyushas. They also looked like musical organs, so they were called Stalin's Organ. Germany used different systems like the Nebelwerfer.

Even the US Navy used rockets on their boats. The Japanese also used large rockets that were very accurate. Some of these were so big they needed small cranes to load.

Today, rocket artillery is much more advanced than the old fire arrows. Modern rockets use internal guiding systems to stay on course.

They also use GPS, which is a way to find exact locations using satellites. This makes them very accurate when they hit a target.

We can see how technology has moved from simple bamboo sticks to smart machines. It is a long journey from the first fire arrows to the tools we use now.
