Rocket artillery is a specialized branch of weaponry that uses rockets as projectiles. Unlike traditional artillery, which uses expanding gases from a gun barrel to push a shell, rocket artillery relies on the thrust produced by the rocket itself. This technology has evolved from simple incendiary devices into highly sophisticated, guided systems. Throughout history, these weapons have served both physical and psychological purposes on the battlefield. They can deliver explosive, shrapnel, or incendiary payloads to specific locations.

The mechanism of a rocket involves a combustion chamber filled with propellant. In early designs, such as those from the Kingdom of Mysore, this chamber was a tube made of soft hammered iron. This tube was usually about 8 inches long and between 1.5 and 3 inches in diameter. The iron tube acted as a combustion chamber for well-packed black powder propellant. When ignited, the expanding gases create thrust, pushing the rocket forward. To maintain direction, these early rockets were often strapped to a bamboo shaft about 4 feet long.

Rocket technology has progressed through several distinct developmental stages. The earliest stage involved medieval fire arrows used in China. These were often launched from multiple launch systems, such as the Korean hwacha, which could fire hundreds of arrows at once.

The second stage saw the introduction of metal-cylinder casings in the 16th-century Mughal Empire. This made rockets more weatherproof and allowed for more gunpowder. The third stage was the development of iron-cased rockets in South India. These iron tubes allowed for higher thrust and a longer range of up to 2 kilometers.

A major turning point occurred in 1801 when the British Royal Arsenal began a research and development program. This was driven by the experiences of the British in India, where they had suffered significantly from Mysorean rockets. Colonel William Congreve led this research. He introduced a standardized formula for gunpowder and used mechanical grinding mills to ensure uniform consistency. Congreve's rockets were more elongated and featured a "cylindro-conoidal" warhead. He also used machines to ensure the powder was packed perfectly.

The significance of Congreve's work was seen in the increased range and variety of his weapons. His rockets could be fired up to two miles away. The range was determined by the degree of elevation of the launching frame. He also introduced shot into the payload to add shrapnel damage to the incendiary effects. These rockets were used in major historical events, such as the naval bombardment of Copenhagen. During that event, over 25,000 rockets were launched, causing severe incendiary damage.

In the 19th century, engineers worked to solve the problem of aerodynamic stability. Early rockets were often inaccurate and prone to premature explosions. An engineer named William Hale developed a rocket that used tail fins and directed nozzles for the exhaust. This design imparted a spin to the rocket during flight. The spin stabilized the trajectory and greatly improved accuracy, though it slightly reduced the maximum range. These Hale rockets were used effectively by the United States during the Mexican War in 1846.

Modern rocket artillery saw a massive resurgence during World War II. The Soviet Union deployed the Katyusha series, which were mounted on trucks or light tanks. German forces nicknamed them "Stalin's Organ" because of their sound and appearance. Germany also used the Nebelwerfer, which were mounted on small wheeled carriages.

In the Pacific, the Japanese used very large rockets. Their 40 cm launchers were so heavy they required small hand-operated cranes for loading. These weapons were highly accurate and had a strong psychological effect on troops.

Today, rocket artillery is defined by precision and advanced guidance. Modern systems often use an internal guiding system or GPS to maintain accuracy. This allows the projectiles to hit specific targets with much higher reliability than the unguided rockets of the past. Technology has moved from simple bamboo-guided fire arrows to complex, satellite-linked machines. This evolution connects the ancient history of chemical propulsion to the modern era of digital precision.
