Using a pogo stick follows a simple way of working. It has a long pole with a handle at the top. You place your feet on footpads near the bottom. A spring is located inside the pole. To jump, you bend your knees up and down. This action adds energy to the spring. When the spring is fully squeezed, it pushes back. This recoil launches the jumper into the air. You can also steer by shifting your weight.

Many people helped create the pogo stick over time. In 1881, George H. Herrington patented spring stilts. He lived in Wichita, Kansas. Later, Max Pohlig and Ernst Gottschall invented a modern version. They lived in Germany and registered a patent in 1920. Some think the name "pogo" comes from their last names. In 1957, George B. Hansburg patented a two-handle design. He told a story about a girl named Pogo from Burma. Her father made a simple device to help her travel.

People watch these athletes on sites like YouTube. There is even a big event called Pogopalooza. This is a World Championship for Xpogo. It shows how much people love this bouncy activity. The basic idea of riding a spring stays the same. It is still a wonderful way to move.
