Slacklining

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Slacklining is a sport built on balance and focus. It involves walking or running along a flat piece of webbing. This webbing is stretched between two anchors.

Unlike a tightrope, a slackline has much less tension. This makes the line feel dynamic. It can stretch and bounce like a long, narrow trampoline. When people walk the line, they often move their arms to stay steady. This helps them if their center of mass shifts.

There are many different styles to try. Tricklining is very popular because the kits are easy to set up. People do many tricks, such as walking backward or jumping onto the line. Some experts even perform flips and twists. Highlining is another style done high above the ground or water. Many people see highlining as the top of the sport.

Highliners use safety gear like a climbing harness and a leash. Some people even try "free-solo" slacklining without any extra equipment.

People have been practicing different kinds of balance for thousands of years. Modern slacklining started around 1976. A rock climber named Adam Grosowsky is credited with its start. In 1985, Scott Balcom successfully crossed the Lost Arrow Spire highline. Later, in 2007, Libby Sauter became the first woman to cross that same line.

Other styles like rodeolining became popular in 1999. This style uses a very loose rope that swings back and forth.

Athletes have set many amazing records in this sport. In 2021, four athletes from Germany walked a line over 1,000 meters long. This happened near Abisko, Sweden. In 2006, Christian Schou walked a line 1,000 meters high in Norway. Some people even walk with their eyes closed. In 2019, two German slackliners walked a 975-meter-long line while blindfolded. This took place in Kislovodsk, Russia.

Slacklining can be found in many places today. Urbanlining brings the sport to city parks and streets. Some people try timelining to see how long they can stay on the line. Others do streetlining, which uses power moves like handstands. The sport has even appeared in big shows, like Madonna's halftime performance in 2012. It is a way to test how strong and steady your body can be.
